St Augustine Lawn issues?

We recently moved into a new house (2 months back).

House came with St. Augustine in good health. We then installed automatic sprinkler system (2 weeks back). The contractor manually removed chunks of grass to perform the work to lay the water lines. He put all back but all the grass along those lines dried immediately. He assured that it will grow back with good watering in a week or two.

We have been watering those patches/lines every other day but the grass has grown back on very few spots. A lot of it is still showing no signs of life. Also since then, we have seen lot of spurious tall grass emerging at different spots. Contractor is willing to replace the dry patches if they do not grow but says that the wild tall grass growing is not due to his work. So he is refusing to do anything to it.

My questions -

1) How long does it take for grass to regrow when taken out and replaced back this way.

2) What do I need to do about the tall grass - just mow and hope it doesn't regrow?

The spurious grass you see is probably nutsedge. The lawn sprinkler installer is probably not responsible for this weed. Many times it comes already thriving in new St. Augustine.

You need to treat the lawn with Image which is available in most Lowes or Home Depot stores as well as ACE Hardware. Treat and re-treat the lawn as directed. The Image kills the nutsedge without harming your St. Augustine lawn. If you just have a few areas, you can knock them out individually, but it is best to treat the entire lawn.

As far as your grass goes, the St. Augustine will eventually fill in by itself, but you could help it with a few plugs.

The contractor is probably not responsible for the long grass cause he didn't sow anything. let him replace the patches which died. if you mow that long grass it will most likely come back.
